This unit offers a cultural history of the 'long 1960s' in the western world, primarily the United States, incorporating a study of momentous social, political and cultural changes: the Cold War, The Vietnam War, student movements, civil rights and black power movements, the rise of the New Right, and the emergence of feminism and women's liberation. In particular, the unit will examine how forces of conservatism and radicalism responded to change in the 1960s, and how these changes were reflected through culture and the emerging counter-culture.
