In this unit we pull apart global legal systems, and question whether law can effectively regulate diverse social, political and technological issues. We discuss rights, obligations and dilemmas of being a citizen in western, non-western, and non-state legal systems. We draw on Common, public, international and indigenous law, and look at socio-legal construction of political authority and judicial activism. Topics include: individual versus public good, national security, human rights, religion, crime, decency, the media, technology, and social opportunity.
