This unit introduces you to India with a succession of lectures that blend history and anthropology, taking you through Indian history with a power/performance focus in mind. Many lectures will focus on religion as a field of power and performance. We will look at broad cultural themes such as: 'sacrifice' in Hindu India, the performance of charismatic power in courtly and popular traditions in Muslim and Hindu India, and the new and old meanings in nationalist constructions of India. Embodiment is also a central theme in this unit and we will attend to the body as the grounding for culture and experience in our ethnographic study of India.
