Egyptian Funerary Beliefs

In this unit, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of Egyptian funerary beliefs and practices via research seminar presentations and group discussion. The topics considered will include the examination of the archaeological evidence to identify advances in tomb design, innovations in funerary scenes and archaeological assemblages (coffins, shabtis, canopic equipment, models etc.) as well as developments in mummification and in royal/elite religious ideology throughout different periods of Egyptian history. The unit will also examine the different deities associated with death and the hereafter. -- Course Website
