This course examines the relationship between popular music and film. The course considers the different ways in which popular music and film have intersected since the 1950s and the 'birth of rock n roll'. The course has a roughly equal focus on British and American examples. It considers the development of various genres of film devoted to popular music and its performers including teen/delinquent films, jukebox musicals, star vehicles, direct cinema/cinema verite, biopics, concert films, the pop compilation score, the nostalgia film, dance film and rock documentary.
