This course provides the universal, film theory/history grounding now standard for film students. This is a survey of film and television history from its beginnings in 1895, until mid-century, approximately 1960. <br/>Topics include the birth of film, its rise (1914-1919), early German, French and Soviet advancements in film, Hollywood's contributions (distribution, sound, studio system, censorship, directors, color etc.), emerging film in Britain and Australia, Italian Neo-realism, transitions after the war (decline of the system, rise of independents, competition from TV, changes in Genres etc.).
