This unit will investigate the social, material and symbolic role of architecture in traditional, changing, and contemporary Austral-Asian and Southeast Asian societies, developing an understanding of its social and philosophical underpinnings and an appreciation of its creativity. The unit will cover indigenous traditions and cultures, the influence of Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam, the effects of colonialism and imperialism, the relationship between architecture and postcolonial identity, and prospects for the future. -- Course Website
