This unit focuses upon the history and theory of architecture, painting and sculpture. It considers developments of form, technique and iconography deriving from different cultures and includes: the beginnings of building in the landscape, early settlements and monuments for ritual celebration, expressions of order, authority and power, figurative, symbolic and abstract representation, space and sacred geometry, conventions and innovations affecting style, canons of beauty and idealism, anthropomorphism, secularism and sensuality, patterns of appropriation. It elucidates shared attitudes, forms and ideas and celebrates difference. -- Course Website
