The unit begins with a discussion of natural and cultural heritage values as expressed in the terms ‘cultural landscapes’ and ‘Country’. Students consider different ways of knowing and understanding in the context of the conversation across knowledge systems. The unit examines the idea of the Australian landscape as a cultural construction embodying complex human relationships connecting nature, human nature and the environment. The use of interpretation in the process of assessing heritage ‘Significance’ is examined with reference to current international and national practice.
