The aim of this unit is to provide a practical guide to the use and evaluation of materials in automotive applications. The unit begins with a sound understanding of materials and component testing and builds to vehicle testing, including crash. Topics to be addressed in this unit include: Materials performance testing - mechanical testing of materials; engineering stress and strain. Component testing - design and construction of mechanical testing rigs; appropriate selection of properties to be tested; modelling component testing.
