The Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities 2006 (Vic) (the Charter) commenced on 1 January 2008. The Act states that to the extent that it is possible all legislation in Victoria must be interpreted in a manner which is compatible with human rights. Public authorities are also required to grant the rights set out in the Charter. The impact of the Charter is wide-ranging. All legal practitioners must be familiar with the operation of the Charter to properly advise clients regarding their rights and remedies. This unit will provide students with a sound understanding of the Charter. -- Course Website
