This unit introduces the use of economic tools to evaluate environmental issues. It is designed to develop in students an awareness of the socio-economic issues relevant to natural resource management. Topics include: the relationship between the economy and the environment; market failure and environmental problems; an introduction to Benefit Cost Analysis as a decision making tool; discussion of methods of valuation of environmental goods and services; the allocation of renewable resources (catchments and agriculture); the allocation of common property resources (fisheries) and the economics of biodiversity.Assessment -- Course Website
