This unit aims to introduce students to the nature and politics of qualitative research. Students will explore the types of research questions that can be answered using qualitative methods. Examples of qualitative health research questions include the meaning of experience (such as having diabetes, being from an ethnic or cultural minority, or exercising), how our experiences (such as breast feeding being socially isolated or running a health program) are shaped by culture, norms and institutions, and how social processes (such as quitting smoking or becoming empowered) occur within social contexts.
