The unit adopts a framework of children as learners who construct their own understanding of mathematics in the home, the classroom and the wider community. The unit aims to promote students’ understanding of how children’s mathematical concepts develop in the key areas of mathematics — number, measurement, space and chance and data. Students will explore the development of effective learning programs to support children’s construction of mathematical concepts. Students will be introduced to a range of effective teaching strategies and aids, as well as effective ways of incorporating the use of learning technologies.
