This unit explores the idea of culture as it applies to schools. Schools are argued to construct their cultures out of the varied cultures of those that work in them and the communities and organisations that surround them. The origins of the idea of school culture are discussed, as is the relationship between school culture and school effectiveness. The multiplicity of cultures that exist within schools are examined as are the influences of gender, race and class. Finally a case study of the interactions of internal and external, local and global, community and policy contexts of schools' cultures is examined.Assessment -- Course Website
