The unit explores the intersections that occur between philosophy, public policy and the ‘natural environment’ in different cultural settings. Beginning with an historical account of the development of philosophical attitudes towards the ‘natural environment’, the course proceeds to consider shifts in cultural and utilitarian relationships to the environment, and concludes with a discussion of contemporary issues in natural resource management and environmental policy.
