This unit introduces students to various approaches available to the study of communication and to some critical 'tools' with which to examine a variety of communication texts and practices, such as film, advertising and news media. Topics of study include non-verbal communication, culture, narrative, discourse, workplace communication, semiotics, digital/new media, and how audiences make meaning. The unit examines the links between communication and power, paying particular attention to issues of ideology, gender, and ethnicity. -- Course Website
