This unit focuses on central issues in the analysis of political leadership. Drawing on Machiavelli, Weber and contemporary scholars, the unit analyses the relationship between individual attributes, including charisma, populist intuition and moral authority, and contextual factors such as culture and institutions. The unit is organised around case studies of figures such as Hitler and Stalin, Castro and other leaders in the developing world, and Labor and Liberal leaders in Australia. The role of women in political leadership is one of the themes explored.
