This unit explores the ways in which your lives are affected by and how you can affect the way power operates in our society. The various political parties in Australia, what and who they stand for (and how this has changed and is changing) are discussed in detail. Focus is on current and controversial policy issues to engage interest, and from there we look at relevant process matter. The issues include: race relations; asylum seeker policy; Australian participation in overseas conflicts; welfare reform; the media; whether Australia should become a republic; and whether new social movements can revitalise Australian democracy. -- Course Website
