This unit focuses on questions of gender and sexuality in Australian history from the experience of Indigenous society to the mid 20th century. During the 19th century concepts of Australian masculinity and femininity were redefined, and gender relations changed through the experiences of colonisation and nationalism. The unit focuses on how the experience of gender was affected by issues of class and ethnicity as well as through race. Students will study the ways in which gender is relevant to understanding intellectual, political and social change in Australian history.
