This unit will introduce students to the politics of the Middle East in both the regional and international dimensions. The unit will investigate the relations of the region with the West. A particular emphasis will be placed on the changing role of the United States in the Middle East since the end of the Cold War and its push to democratize the region. Several of the endemic conflict situations, which exist in the Middle East, will be examined including the Israel-Palestine impasse, the current wars in the region and Iran’s nuclear ambitions. -- Course Website
