The primary objective of this unit is to introduce students to the domestic politics of the Middle East, and to the intellectual and ideological currents, which shape those politics. Starting with the First World War, which effectively redrew the political map of the region, the unit traces the rise and decline of European influence on the Middle East. It reviews the mid-century revolutions, and the tension between the ambitions of independent states and the world superpowers in the region. -- Course Website
