The unit examines the progress of thinking about the meaning of development and development strategies as these have been revealed in the international development experience since 1950. The perspective taken is cross-disciplinary, but focuses on the role of political thinking and decision as a key indicator of progress. Attention will be given to the idea of the nation and the state, the role of civil and political rights in political development, and notions of representation, participation and accountability, rule of law. Current events are considered in the historical context of long term trends in international development.Assessment -- Course Website
