Beginning with the question, 'When does an ordinary space become a performance arena?' this unit will provide a program of lectures and workshops which explore a series of definitions of space: locational, social, interactional, relative space, and proxemics. The principles discovered through the preliminary stage of the unit will be applied through a series of small performance tasks set in alternative performance spaces, and established techniques and theatrical elements used in outdoor performance will be closely considered.
