This unit surveys the development of design for industry from its origins as part of the revolution in mass manufacturing of the mid nineteenth century to the beginning of the modern consumer design age. It also introduces students to the work of major critics, historians and theorists of design including Ruskin, Dresser, Morris, Gropius, Pevsner and Banham. A unique feature of the unit is the weekly use of works in the design and craft collection of the Art Gallery of Western Australia. -- Course Website
