This unit investigates the philosophies of the twentieth century, looking at the way that art history has debated these philosophies and put them into historical, political and aesthetic contexts. It also investigates their impact on later twentieth-century art, to open up these debates and give students an overview of the problems of twentieth-century art and its histories. These problems include the place of theory in the production of art; the place of women in art; the artist as leader of society; art as itself a force for social change, and conversely of society itself as a work of art. The unit moves from history into theory and back again. -- Course Website
