This unit explains how the different energy systems in the body are used during physical activity and explores in details the mechanisms by which the utilisation of these energy systems is regulated. The mechanisms whereby the energy stores are replenished with and without food intake post-physical activity are also examined, with some emphasis on carbohydrate, fat and protein nutrition for athletes. Finally, the unit explores the latest understanding of the physiological/molecular mechanisms underlying energy balance and imbalance in obesity and associated pathological implications. -- Course Website
