In this unit students explore paradigms as explanatory models, Kuhn's paradigm shift, and whether medicine is 'in crisis'. They become familiar with the range of concepts embedded in the terms primary, comprehensive, coordinated and continuing care and the implications of these concepts for rural generalism. They are able to discuss patient's paradigms in terms of 'illness', the nature of suffering, the concept of 'meaning' and the concept of healing. Students are prepared for advanced consultation skills with respect to advanced empathic listening and emic inquiry. -- Course Website
