This unit focuses on the role of theory and method in research in international relations. Students are introduced to a number of major contending theories and approaches in the field such as behaviouralism, strategic 'realism', the English School, Marxism and related schools, liberalism, and constructivism. Important contributions to research in international relations exemplifying different theories and approaches are discussed. Some attention is also given to the relevance to international relations of wider debates about theory in the social sciences. Commonly used research methods are examined and several methodological issues are discussed. -- Course Website
