This unit examines international relations in the Asia–Pacific region, defined as including East Asia (Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia), South Asia and the South Pacific. A secondary focus is Australia's changing relations with the region. After reviewing the historical evolution of regional relations, attention is given to the contemporary foreign policies of states such as China, Japan, India, the US and Australia, which are influential in regional affairs. Next, the burgeoning regional organisations, such as ASEAN and APEC, and major traditional and human security issues are explored. Australia's role in regionalism and its approach to security issues are also investigated. -- Course Website
