This unit draws together several themes developed in earlier units in the human geography and planning major and introduces students to the specific issues confronting contemporary urban design. Topics covered include medieval cities, order and disorder in urban form, sense of place, townscape composition, spatial syntax, human ecology, civic values and imperatives for change associated with sustainable cities. The main focus is on understanding the importance of people in the urban environment. A specific inner-urban precinct is selected each year as a case study. Students work in groups to devise various levels of urban intervention strategies associated with the case study area. -- Course Website
