This unit is concerned with human development starting from conception through to maturation. The early stages following fertilisation and the timetable of human development of the embryo, placenta and fetus are considered. The timely exposure in utero to environmental molecules that cause malformations is considered against this timetable and following birth, their impact on the lifestyle of the individual. The cell biological processes that underpin the progressive development of the fertilised egg into the human form are discussed, along with how these developmental processes are used by cancerous cells.
