This unit provides students with a sound knowledge and understanding of the diagnostic methods of cellular analysis utilised in haemtology which underpin clinical and diagnostic units which follow. The methods include (1) Haematology analysers—principles, QA, use of scatterplots, limitations, additional modalities (e.g. CD61 counting), new developments; (2) Microscopy—different types of microscopy—light, fluorescence, phase contrast, electron, new developments; (3) Staining techniques—stains, immunocytocemistry; (4) New instrumentation (e.g. CellaVision, Aperio); and (5) Flow cytometry—principles, fluorochromes, compensation, multiparametric analysis, software, new developments (e.g.... -- Course Website
