This unit assumes completion of MICR2204 Introductory Microbiology. The unit introduces the immune response, and the nature of viral and bacterial infections, and microbial genetics. Disorders of the immune system, laboratory tests for infection and vaccines in current use are discussed. In the laboratory sessions students gain a deeper understanding of the activities of bacteria, viruses and fungi, and master laboratory skills for work in a professional microbiology laboratory. The unit is one of the prerequisites for a major in Microbiology. -- Course Website
