This unit focuses on the fundamentals of lubricants, lubrication and wear. The individual sections emphasise a fundamental understanding of the basic lubrication and wear mechanisms before proceeding into more practical applications. On completion of the unit students have good understanding of lubricants and their properties, operating and design aspects of thrust pad, journal and hydrostatic bearings. The students have good understanding of stresses in Hertzian contacts, lubrication problems in rolling contact bearings and gears.
