This unit introduces students to the advanced study of language in its sociocultural context, focusing on the main methods used in researching the relationship between language and society. Because sociolinguistic methods are inseparable from theoretical considerations, this unit also deals with the crucial theoretical proposals driving participant selection, data collection and data analysis and interpretation. Language usage and attitudes are embedded in social, cultural and historical considerations.
