The Indigenous languages of Australia form a unique part both of the story of human language and of Australian Indigenous heritage. This unit focuses on the structural features of Australian languages and considers issues in their analysis from the perspective of linguistic theory. It examines the diversity of Australian languages, the typological parameters by which they can usefully be compared and classified, and the issues in identifying historical relationships between them.
