What do we know about the form of the expressions in our language? How can we describe this knowledge? This unit addresses such fundamental questions by examining foundational issues in the theory of grammar and focuses in particular on the argumentation used in formulating syntactic analyses of linguistic structures within particular theoretical models. Through the unit, students further develop skills in the practice of linguistic analysis, and are introduced to model-theoretic approaches to the explanation of language structures.

Topics include phrase structure systems; lexical categorisation; feature-theoretic and rule-based representations of syntactic structure; extraction... -- Course Website
