What sets our species Homo sapiens apart, more than our forms of social organisation or cultural expression or our tool-making capabilities, is our capacity to communicate with one another through language. This unit introduces students to fundamental concepts in the modern study of language and communication, with particular emphasis on language as a symbolic system and as a form of human (inter)action.
