This unit provides an introduction to the legal principles that govern health care and biomedical research as well as bioethical and social literature evaluating the law. Topics may include (1) the patient–health carer relationship including consent, competence, substituted decision making and privacy; (2) issues arising at the beginning and end of life (including reproduction technologies, pregnancy and childbirth, death and dying); (3) misconduct and adverse events in health care including medical negligence and professional regulation; (4) representing health carers and health care consumers; and (5) bodies and body parts including organ donation and the ownership and use of human tissue. -- Course Website
