This unit provides an introduction to contemporary spoken and written Japanese. The main objective of the unit is for students to develop the basics of everyday communication and communication skills in Japanese by the end of the semester. The unit makes use of all four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students are able to satisfy some basic aural and oral communication needs using the most common polite register, in specific situations such as introduction of self and others, and describing locations and things; initiate and sustain simple conversations in brief sentences spoken slowly; understand simple texts; and write simple original sentences.... -- Course Website
