This unit offers specialised study of Italian language and culture, with special reference to aspects of the evolution of the Italian language and dialects and the place of language in the history and culture of Italy. Different theoretical and conceptual approaches are tested against texts of various kinds (written, audio-visual, sets of linguistic data). The unit consolidates the language competencies of students in writing, reading, listening and speaking. It develops advanced understanding of the interaction of language, culture and society in selected periods of Italian history including Italian migration, through study of linguistic facts against evolving theoretical understandings. -- Course Website
