This unit is taken over two semesters and parts 1 and 2 must be completed to fulfil the requirements of the unit.<br/><br/>Topics covered in the general surgery component of the unit include the principles of general surgery; perioperative care of the surgical patient; common disorders of the head and neck area; tracheostomy; complications of surgery such as bleeding and infection; and wound healing. <br/><br/>Aspects of anaesthesia relevant to dentistry and oral surgery are presented in ten lectures. The role that dentists play in the early development of anaesthesia is discussed.
