This unit uses the discussion and analysis of recent German cultural productions such as advertisements, film, literature and music as the basis for language acquisition. Class discussion focuses mainly on the examination of contemporary film as well as of other visual art and German language culture, on their links to current sociopolitical issues and their connections to wider cultural phenomena. This research-intensive part of the unit covers a broad range of theoretical issues including questions of gender, representation and difference (especially with regard to 'Ostalgie' and 'Auslander').
