The aim of this unit is to introduce students to basic theories and concepts of gender and the way gender issues are central to the understanding of power at the heart of all contemporary debates and social and political issues in Australia as a culturally diverse nation state of the globalising west. The unit looks at ways we encounter gender difference in the different areas of our lives, and in the ways such encounters structure some of the key debates in contemporary Australia, in public life (e.g. in politics) and in private life (e.g. in pornography) and in those areas which cross over into both public and private life (e.g. in debates around abortion)—why is gender implicated in... -- Course Website
