Narrative film is a persuasive and seductive mode, one which has connections with written narrative but which has a semiotic density that makes for major differences in the ways we read each kind of narrative. Australian film has a long history, but particularly since the 1970s when an indigenous film industry was established, it has had an impact on the way Australians see themselves and on the image of Australia in the world at large.
