This unit is an introduction to geology and geological processes as they affect civil and resource engineering projects. Topics include plate tectonics; weathering; erosion; minerals and rock and soil types; the rock cycle, rock-forming processes and soil-forming processes; geological structures; geological hazards; types of engineering constructions and their geologic problems; groundwater, waste disposal, soil classification, clay mineralogy and phase changes. The unit is illustrated with case studies focusing particularly on Western Australia, with a number of trips to local sites. A geomechanics practical may complement the field visits in understanding rock behaviours. -- Course Website
