This unit is taken over two semesters and parts 1 and 2 must be completed in the same calendar year to fulfil the requirements of the unit.

Students are given an open-ended problem of the design of a complete chemical plant. One of the main objectives of the design project is to allow students to make decisions on the choice of process or processing route. The project requires the investigation of appropriate process technology, mass energy balances around plant units or processes, computer-aided design and process simulation, costing of unit operations, assessment of HAZOP, HAZAN, risk, plant control sustainability, environmental impact, site layout and economics.
