This is an advanced-level unit reviewing the diversity, structure and functioning of vertebrates set in an evolutionary context. Particular attention is devoted to contrasting how the fascinating and unique Australian vertebrate fauna has solved the problems of maintaining life, compared with the solutions of the non-Australian vertebrates. The major groups are discussed in terms of osteology, soft anatomy and physiology; reproduction is described from structural and endocrinological viewpoints. Assessment integrates the theoretical, practical and field-based components of the unit.
