This seminar-based unit is one of two units designed to equip students in Asian Studies with the theoretical background necessary for engaging with Asian Studies scholarship at a high level. Key movements within western social theory from humanism, constructionism, Marxism to nationalism and modernisation theory are examined, with an emphasis on how these theories have shaped perceptions of and scholarship on Asia. The focus in this unit is on 'grand narratives' or on theories that purport to explain social development globally.
